In the uk it is quite normal to have the passenger airbag disabled to allow fitment of a rear facing child seat. This is because a babies body can be caused more harm by the deployment of an airbag than the accident itself would cause. You can disable the airbag system by pulling the fuse or by locating the airbag control module and unplugging it,however I would advise you take the car to the dealers and have them disable it using the manufacturers recommended method.
It is legal in the UK to have a child in the front in a safety seat.I would be surprised if you were ever challenged by the police to prove the airbag has been disabled.
Hope this helps

Removing the fuse will disable all the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners if fitted, and leave an annoying malfunction light flashing on your dashboard (some makes and models have a key operated passenger airbag disable switch for child seat fitment). Your MOT tester will advise you of this fault but it's not a failable item. Nor is it illegal for you to use a vehicle with airbags disabled, (any fault on any part of the system will automatically turn off all airbags to avoid erroneous deployment). Whether it is wise to disable a safety feature is another matter. Many people use cars with or without child seats that have no airbags fitted anyway, is there any difference ?

on saturaday last i was driving back from shopping, i left my gaurd down for i second when i took a bend on the road to sharp, lost control struck the hedge the car (mitsibuishi galant a heavy car) acted like a toy car and flip bonnet boot bonet boot and roll on to its side, the driver side. the front the back and the driver side window smash leaving chards of glass everywhere. if it wasn't for the airbags my face would had being shredded to pieces as it was i had a cut neck from the safety belt and a couple of splinters of glass on the side where there wasn't any airbags. i was in survival mode there was smoke everywhere i manage to climb out of the car. the smoke came from the airbags so i was told after. lucky enough there was no one else envolve it could have been a lot worst. i'm still numb by the shock. don't dare go near the airbags what ever money you think you are saving for putting a child into the front seat forget it, buy a bigger car. THINK SAFETY

Dont let your child ride in the front seat, you will get a ticket for pulling crap like that. Not only is it not recommended, it is dangerous and illegal in some states.
Also, if you pull the fuse, sell the car down the road without reinstalling it and the future owner gets in an accident, you are going to get the pants sued off of yourself.

I think that it would be far better to put the child seat in the back were the law says that it has to be for safety reasons. I would have to guess that even if you disabled the airbag it still would not be legal

Only qualified people should touch anything to do with the air bag, do not try anything yourself, you can get hurt if it goes off while you are trying to remove it. However apart from the legal aspects of tampering with it, you will be contravening the Construction and Use regulations, why would you want to, its there for safety!

as will state on the child seat you must put them in the back, not the front hence your problem, by trying to play with the air bag without a clue on wht you are doing you are risking serious injury.
sorry to be a bore but it is your kids life a stake here.

child seat goes in the back
in GMC model pick-up you can disable the passenger air bags, its a matter of preference if someone wants them on or not. I don't wear a seat belt and my state doesnt require I have to.
