Planning on purchasing a '96 Jeep Cherokee Sport tomorrow as a surprise hunting fishing vehicle for my husband. One of the guys that was friend with previous owner said that the rear end slips sometimes. What does that mean, what do I need to replace? Do I go ahead and have it replaced before i get it for him? Thanks!

first off, the cherokee is a great vehicle, very nimble, and a good choice for hunting. i own a 94 cherokee. as for the rear differential, you'll probably end up being fine without replacing anything. the "slip" is sometimes refered to as an "open" differential. meaning that power is routed to one wheel (when there are varying surface conditions under one wheel) you can buy limited slip or locking differentials, but i would wait to let your husband decide if he needs them. a 96 cherokee should have lots of life left in it. i really don't think you need to replace anything. if your rear end had trouble, it would generally be quite obvious. i wouldn't worry about it. get some decent tires (i highly recommend the khumo venture mt) hope this helps. and happy hunting!

It just means that it is not a limited slip differential. You can buy aftermarket limited slip differentials at www.quadratech.com. This makes the differential apply power to both rear wheels. what most people don't realize that a 2 wheel drive car is being driven primarily by one wheel and a four wheel drive vehicle is being driven by two. Limited slip differentials solve this little issue.

Whens the last time you had a tune up or changed your fuel filter? Same as above I had a very similar problem too and it was a bad vacuum hose. O2 Sensor
