Well u can pick anyone about whom you've learned a lot (most likely from the Civil War period) and ur thesis statement is easy, u just write what ur main essay is going to be abt... eg... President Abraham lincoln was a great man in his day and did many noble things. He also however, did have a few faults like every human being.. - does that help?

Why dont you write about someone famous from British history. There are plenty of king henry VIII sites if you google his name or Tudors. Plus a good site on www.bbc.co.uk
Does choose two characteristics mean part of the famous character. Because if so Henry is a brilliant character.

How about writing about Mary Secole who was a nurse during the crimean war.
She tried to enlist as a nurse in England but because of her colour was denied. So she paid for her own fare to Crimea and set up a hospital for soldiers to recover in. She was later awarded the Crimean medal.
She wrote a book called The adventures of Mrs. Secole's Many Lands in 1854.
When it asks for characteristics, find out from research whether she was kind, tolerant, patient, frustrated etc.

write about someone you know a lot about
(i.e. presidents, oprah winfrey, steve erwin (my favorite choice), ummmmm rosa parks, etc)
