A mantra is a religious syllable or poem, typically from the Sanskrit language. Their use varies according to the school and philosophy associated with the mantra. They are primarily used as spiritual conduits, words or vibrations that instill one-pointed concentration in the devotee. Other purposes have included religious ceremonies to accumulate wealth, avoid danger, or eliminate enemies. Mantras originated in India with Vedic Hinduism and were later adopted by Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains, now popular in various modern forms of spiritual practice which are loosely based on practices of these Eastern religions.

The Sanskrit word mantra- (m. मन्त्रः, also n. मन्त्रं) consists of the root man- "to think" (also in manas "mind") and the suffix -tra meaning, tool, hence a literal translation would be "instrument of thought". Mantras are interpreted to be effective as sound (vibration), to the effect that great emphasis is put on correct pronunciation (resulting in an early development of a science of phonetics in India). They are intended to deliver the mind from illusion and material inclinations. Chanting is the process of repeating a mantra.

A Mantra is a way of stilling the mind. Most of the day we are busy with our thoughts. Thoughts are basically the past that we carry with us throughout our daily lives that mutter and play mental movies and distract us to the point that we are not really experiencing the immediacy of life.

By using a Mantra in meditation the mind has something to focus on that keeps it quiet and helps to still discursive thinking. This helps to bring you into the moment. Eventually, you can let the Mantra drop and simply pay attention in your daily life. It sounds simple but it is difficult to master. Kind of like checkers.

My Mantra?
I tell myself over and over "Just breathe..."
When I was going through my divorce 7 yrs ago. I felt a lot of pain and isolation. When things became too much and I felt like I was going to lose my sanity I would say those words to myself. My way of telling myself to take it all one second at a time.
Now that my life is much better:) I use it now as a way to remind myself to slow down...not to let everything overwhelm me.
Don't know if that answers your question....
