I'm thinking of moving to Japan to teach English. What is the electrical system like there? Would the American plugs even work? How would I sign up for the internet? Would it be practical to bring the computer?

Computers are a dime a dozen in japan and in hong kong.
you would be much better off saving all that weight, and just carrying your software disks. load the software into any computer you choose once in japan. you will be amazed at the variety of new equipment available there at bargain prices.

You can bring your North American computer, but get an adapter with a transformer. The American plugs won't work.

A lot of people do this safely and it is practical to bring your computer because Japan is not known for cheap computers. I suggest you ask your colleagues how to sign up for internet there. Be aware that it's more expensive to get internet and use it in Japan.

Look at your power supply. It probably says something line 100-240 volts, 50-60 hz. All you will need is a cheap plug adapter. There is probably better internet service in Japan then in the US. Keep using the same internet sites and language will not be a problem.

I am an American teaching English in Japan and I am writing to you using my laptop from Japan. There aren't any problems at with bringing your computer. I actually recommend that you do bring it. Internet cafes in Japan are very expensive. My monthly bill for having internet isn't all that bad at all. Very competitive to what it is in the States.

to answer your question, yes you can bring your PC here to Japan. The power is pretty much the same as in the USA. You can plug it into a wall socket with no problem.

why not? i think it's better for you to have a computer from the U.S. if you buy one from Japan, then toolbar and all the stuff would be in Japanese.

i'm originally from Japan and living in the states now. i bought my computer here in the states. i will bring my computer back to Japan when i go home.
