A true alcoholic is any person, who uses alcohol to medicate his or her problems with, as a way or practice of life. These individuals are sick people, who genuinely are dependent upon alcohol, to get them through life's problems and challenges.
Remember; alcoholism is alcohol IS m not alcohol WAS m ! Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic ! He or she can not imbibe in alcohol EVER without re- triggering the vicious cycle of dependency. A note of caution: There are "problem" drinkers and there are alcoholics - a huge difference. If you have a person, who you suspect is into the bottle a way too much, then, contact your local area A.A. (Alcoholics Anynominous), Ala-non, or Ala-teen chapter or group for direction. Remember; alcohlism effects every member of the family - it is a family issue! It requires trained or/and skilled people to remedy the problem. If left unaddressed, Alcoholism will disassemble a family and life. Be wise and seek help for yourself and your child(ren) if the alcoholic refuses to deal with the problem. Typically, there are a lot of women alcoholics too - not just a man's issue! An alcohlic once told me, "alcohol is a great cleaner; it cleaned out my marriage, family, friends, bank account and job" ! It is also, typical for the practicing alcoholic to come from a family who had/have alcohol abuse. i.e.: father, mother, (both),brother, sister, aunt, uncle, cousin, grand father or grand mother or a generational practice of times past. Hope this supplies you with some direction in your quest for a remedy to the drinker in your life! Alcoholism is no joke !!!

A true alcoholic is a person who drinks and that drinking interferes with their life. It doesn't have a thing to do with how often you drink, though most alcoholics drink regularly. What it does have to do with is how it affects your life and the lives of those around you when you drink.
My husband is a recovering alcoholic, 10 years sober, but when he drank it dealt deadly blows to everyone around him. He didn't drink often, but when he did he drank until he was so drunk he didn't know who he was, where he was, or what year it was, let alone anything else. I've seen him put holes through walls with his fists, call me names he would never call me sober and do things he would never do otherwise. It is a debilitating disease and one hard to admit you have and even harder to overcome.

Someone who is missing way to many days at work, doesn't really think about how it effects the family. No work means only no groceries. For some reasons credit cards are always maxed right out. Can't ever say no to a drink, and has a very negative look upon life, "nobody likes me" kinda attitude. He just has to have one more, "just one." Ya right, that one more can have a very crucial effect. These are just a few ways to tell, I'm guessing there are many more.

Someone who can't function without having a drink, thats what I would consider a true alcoholic. There are people out there including me that like to drink but I am not going to classifiy myself as an alcoholic, because I can function without a drink.

Me. Do you really want me to answer that ? There are several different sets of answers. Physical allergy, mental obsession, and spiritual malady - these go hand in hand. The DSM4 lists criteria, including loss of control, black outs, preoccupation, repeated attempts and failures to quit... I could go on and on. But I won't.

In agreement with Jessica, someone who drinks EVERY DAY....
period!!!! Whether hard liquor, a small bottle of beer or wine....
EVERY DAY that an individual drinks ANY form of alcohol is a "true" alcoholic.
Peace**************

Someone who's drinking is negatively impacting their life to the point where they can't hold a job, can't be in a committed relationship and still can't stop drinking.
