When VH-1 still had "Behind the Music" they kept saying the "Pre-Fab Four." What does that mean? Why were they called such?

because the Beatles were the Fab Four, and the Monkees were big before the Beatles. also because they were a manufactured, or "pre-fabricated", band

The Monkees kind of took over the American pop or rock scene before we had a chance to really get a taste of the Beatles(the fab four).

Well, the Fab Four were the Beatles, of course. And "pre-fab" refers to manufactured housing. I think it's referring to the fact that they were cast by a producer to fit the idea he had for the look and personality of the group, rather than coming together organically because of their mutual taste in and talent for music.

Pre-Fab in this case means Prefabricated. As in they weren't a real band. TV producer's wanted to make a show about a band and they cast 4 actors who knew how to play instruments and had them pretend to be a band called The Monkees.

The Beatles are called "the fab four" and the Monkees came before them so I guess that's where it came from. (a little before my time, but I think that's it).
