The only way to know for sure is to be evaluated by a mental health professional. The big difference between depression and bipolar disorder is that depression is being in a consistently sad and depressed state, whereas bipolar disorder cycles between periods of depression and mania (periods or high energy, lower inhibitions, hyperactivity). If you are experiencing both extremes, you are probably bipolar, but if you are just feeling the lows, you are probably depressed. You should still see a doctor and get treatment though.

Bipolar disorder (once known as Manic-Depressive Disorder) often consists of emotionally manic highs and depressive lows, but not always. The disorders are very similar, and as such, both need treatment. Seek help from a psychologist or a psychiatrist. The latter can prescribe medications, and the former can probably help you overcome much of it on your own, in many cases.

I am not a doctor but have been around a bipolar person, and I can tell you that you can have depression and not be bipolar but if you are bipolar you have depression. Depression should go away but if you think you are bipolar please see a shrink as soon as possible because it is a very serious illness. It could be a matter of life and the other thing

My daughter is bi polar. Depression is part of being bi polar, but it's not the only part. The other side is the manic part, and it's just as bad as the depression if not worse.
You can be only depressed, and this is basically just a sad or hopeless type of feeling. The blues.
Go get help if you're not sure. It's the best advice I can give you.

Unless you just want a bunch of crackpot speculation or to entertain an idle thought I suggest you speak with someone who can evaluate you in person and give an educated analysis. I wish you well.
