If you are a US citizen, the US government won't allow you to go to Cuba unless you get a special government license, and you won't get one for a holiday. Instead, you must go through another country and ask the Cuban immigration authorities not to stamp your passport. Do not go through Canada or the Bahamas, since some US citizens have problems going through those places at times. Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic is probably the best and safest gateway city to use. Book a flight from wherever you are to Santo Domingo. Nash Travel or cubalinda.com can help you arrange you flight from there to Havana, and give you the required tourist card and hotel reservations, and insurance. Most American credit cards won't work in Cuba so you'll have to use cash or credit cards from another country's bank. Make sure to save about $30 for the airport departure tax. Happy travels!

I was in Cuba, and loads of us citizens were there... They all had to go via Canada, but it's perfectly legal!

Travel to another country that allows travel to Cuba and go from there. I wouldn't recommend it though.
