Don't do things in the hour or two before bedtime that make your mind active and awake. Don't play games, do homework, have anything with caffeine in it or lots of chemical additives (including chocolate). Try to do something like reading or have a bath or listen to relaxing music before bed time. One thing you might do before bedtime is write down all the things that are in your head at the time so that you won't worry about forgetting something important. You could try doing some simple mind exercises to help you get to sleep. For example... try and name a kind of food beginning with A then B then C etc to get through the whole alphabet. If you finish try and find a second thing. There's endless categories and the process will stop your mind wondering off to think about all the things that usually keep you awake.

The best thing to do is settle into a good sleeping pattern, by getting up and going to bed at the same times every day. Being generally healthier will improve your sleep patterns, so try to get at least half an hour of cardiovascular excercise everyday (this can be anything as simple as a brisk walk - as long as it increases your heartbeat), and obviously avoid junk food, sugary drinks, and try to get your 'five a day' portions.
In the mean time there are mental excercises you can do to clear your mind of unwanted clutter and get to sleep. You can look these up relatively easily, but one example is counting backwards from a thousand to zero in your head.
Other than that, if you urgently need to start getting some sleep straight away, the key is to go to sleep as soon as you feel tired and make sure you will not be disturbed by loud noises or bright lights. Once you push past this and stay awake past the time when you feel sleepy, it becomes very difficult to get to sleep.

Making sure you don't do anything overstimulating for at least an hour or so before you go to bed (like games!), try and wind down and watch some unchallenging TV or read a chilled out book with some gentle lights and only quiet music, and drink warm milky drinks, like the other guys said. Lavender oil on your pillow is meant to help relax and sooth you into sleep, also taking deep long breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth can calm you down and slow you into a happy sleepy place. Winding down can be really hard work, it takes practice.

take a break from the games. the mind needs relaxing so the body can too. reading works for some, but a steady routine is best with light meals at the end of the day and bigger, healthly meals when you get up. the body will adjust to a time schedule regardless if you're a day person or night person.

You should go to bed with a light stomach. That is why it is advised to have the last meal of the day atleast 3 hrs before you retire for the day.
Keep your free of worries of all kinds. For this plan your activities accordingly to remain stressfree all the time.
Have a vigorous workout or a brisk walk - an hour before you go to bed.
Have a hot water bath after this work-out.
Then have a cup of hot milk with honey.
You will sleep like a baby.

Have a talk-radio station on quietly in the background to distract you and stop your mind racing.I somtimes wake up in the morning with it still on.It doesn't use any more power than a low wattage nightlight.
