Sperm has a limited life once it enters your body.
The best time to have sex when trying for a baby is starting on the 14th day after your last period. It is around this time that your egg is released. Then if you have sex just once a day then the sperm will hopefully be better quality than if you have sex more than that in one day.

Sperm will only survive for 48-72 hours inside the woman's vagina. Your best chance to have a baby would be during ovulation when the egg is released. It is not gaurenteed though because the inside of a woman's vagina is very acidic and only 10% of the sperm will survive through the first 10 minutes. Also most of the sperm die before they ever get close to reaching the egg.
Once the egg is released, it travels to the fallopian tube. If you want to conceive, now's the time. The egg has about 24 hours to unite with a sperm. Since sperm cells can survive in your reproductive tract for two to three days, it's best to have regular sex during the days leading up to ovulation.

OK this will sound really complicated. 5 days before your period you ovulate and 5 days after you do to. You will hear often that if you have sex during ovulation you will get pregnant...this said, it is true. However many women take their temperature before their period to find the highest point of ovulation. When your temperature is at its highest your ovulation is at its highest. It takes about 2 or 3 cycles to get this right. Some women are lucky and hit right on the head. MIND YOU you can get pregnant on your period. however the chances of that are rare. If you are not on your period and not ovulating the chances of pregnancy are very very very low. SPERM can live inside a woman's body for up to 72 hours or 3 days and no longer. if the sperm fails to fertilize in that time it will die and flush from your system. Most of the time when this happens women seek out OBGYNs to help out the process. No sperm can not live outside the body and no you can not get pregnant in water with out intercourse. They are good swimmers but not that good. Anytime sperm are subject to oxygen they will die.

Tracking your menstrual cycle is a key part of determining when you are ovulating and consequently when is your best time to conceive. You need to get to know your body's natural fertility signs in order to determine this. Fourteen days into your cycle high levels of estrogen trigger the release of the egg which then lives for approximately 12-24 hours. This is the tiny window of opportunity you have to fertilize the egg. However, sperm can live for five days in ideal conditions and so your chances of conceiving are best when you can predict exactly when you will be ovulating and plan intercourse around this time.

Sperm can live for up to 4 hours inside you. So either the sperm meats the egg at the time or you don't get pregnant.
