Technically, yes. Due to lack of oxygen in space, there is no possible way for sound to travel. Likewise in space movies where there are explosions and the like. It is impossible for an explosion the size of the Death Stars in Star Wars to occur.

The old original Star Trek was one of the few space shows that didn't have the sounds of explosions travelling through space.
You actually might get some noise when the gas from the explosion hits you if you're close enough to it.

There is no sound in space because there is no atmosphere. The first poster was incorrect about explosions in space, though. There is oxygen in the death star and onboard of space vehicles, so you would see a fireball. Plus if there is a nuclear reactor, there would be an explosion like an H-bomb.

Watch 2001 a Space Odyessy. When Dave is in the pod and trying to get back into the ship, the sounds are correct. Complete silence when viewing exterior shots.

There is no air in space to carry sound. You couldn't hear the *sound* of a passing ship's engines. BUT...
... BUT an explosion is a ball of expanding gases. If those expanding gases were to strike a spaceship's hull, the hull would transmit that "collision" to the air inside the ship and you'd hear the explosion.

Yup, completely wrong, as there is no air in space (it's not just a lack of oxygen). But considering all the other science that movies get wrong, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Sound travels by waves and those waves require matter to travel. however the concussion of the explosion could be heard and felt. But it would not sound the same and you would have to be very close to the explosion to perceive the concussion as it fill the void of space.
hope this helps

That makes me wonder - if a spaceship explodes in space and makes no noise, does everyone onboard still scream?

Definately not. Space big size cannot easily go through time net then cannot achieve future and pass.

it's hollywood. An epic battle in space would be dead boring without the roaring and exploding.
