Depends on your application. Some programs and games are made for a specific model. Especially when it comes to games.
Personally, I know that a lot of people using MAYA (the high end 3d program) have many problems using ATI cards. The recommended brand is always Nvidia for that particular program. Again, it depends on what you need it for. For just playing games, either one would be good. Pick something that runs quiet and cool. That's usually more important than the maker.
Some Nvidia producers will give you life time warranty on their cards. Imho, that's worth it and shows confidence in their product.

It depends on your application.
For TV-Out applications, ATI is better.
For Gaming applications they're probably pretty close to the same.
Nvidia doesn't make their own cards, they sell the chips to other companies who make cards - ATI makes their own cards.
In my experience, ATi's latest chips and products are much better than Nvidia, because when you get an Nvidia solution it's really just an Nvidia chip on some 3rd-party's graphics card - that card could be a junker or it could be well done, either way, Nvidia is off the hook for quality problems because they "don't make graphics cards". That's a cop-out in my opinion. ATI has better quality products and excellent chips. Even if Nvidia has excellent chips, they're not always installed on quality products.
I am an AMD fan, and AMD just acquired ATI. Therefore my vote goes to ATI.

Mate, its undoubtedly Nvidia arena. Cards based on Nvidia chipsets perform much better and tend to be cheaper than ATi at comparable performance. ATI is RIP. Try a model from XFX for best packages and performance. Since u haven't mentioned ur budget, it is not possible to tell what will suit ur needs. Just drop in a mail if u need help

The more important question to ask first is what type of slot on your motherboard do you have to connect the video card. If you only have PCI cards, then your choices are pretty limited (everything will be cheap and low-mid range). If you have AGP or PCI Express slots, then you'll have plenty of choices and the other answers people provided would apply.

any time you compare brands like that, you will get a bunch of people from both sides telling you that their video cards it better.
its sorta like the ford vs chevy vs mopar battles that have been going on for forever. there is no clear winner because they are both good!
my personal preference is for ATI because they are very flexible in what monitors can be hooked up and what resolutions you can use.

Technically speaking, nVidia doesn't actually make video cards, only the graphics processing unit (GPU) which third party manufacturers make boards from.
Having said that, neither one is the "best", as it is really gpu model dependent. You have to compare specific models to determine which is best.
