A parent is responsible to keep teh child physically safe, sheltered and well-fed. That is the only absolute for any parents in any situation.

In my opinion, you must also teach them as much as they are capable of learning. At a minimum, you must teach them whatever skills are neccesarry to prosper in your environment. That's reading\writing in modern America, and how to hunt antelope for tribes on the serengeti.

Nothing else is neccessary, only a really good idea. Attention, affection, and everything else you were probably looking for in an answer, are not absolutely -needed- to raise a stable, prosperous child. They are merely a really, really good idea for the cherry on good parenting.

Try to keep in mind what you went through in childhood. Treat your child like an individual, guide him but don't do everything for him or he won't learn independence. Be someone he can confide in. Don't violate his trust. Be consistent in everything, but give up small battles so the child doesn't feel overwhelmingly controlled. Don't hit. Make rules and stick with them, so the child doesn't feel out of control, himself. If you feel overwhelmed, join a parenting support group or take an online class to have people to talk to who are in your situation.

Your child is learning about life from your words and your actions, so think about what will result in an adult who is happy and confident. If you don't like something your parents did to you, do the opposite. I did, and it all worked out well.

To teach your children how to function properly in society by instruction and setting an example. You don't just have to make sure they don't die. You have to prepare them for their life as an adult. This requires a loving, nurturing environment.

One specific thing a lot of people forget - you are also responsible for your children eating decent food and not becoming overweight.

To teach their child love, honor, respect, humility, & financial responsibility.
To teach them wrong from right and how to learn from your mistakes as well as their own.
To not laugh at their mistakes.
To understand that they aren't perfect and neither are you, you will always have your differences and that's okay.
To be there when they need someone to listen.
To teach effective communication. Listen!
To use good judgement and to not judge (if that makes sense).
To never say that you do not love them... the scar of that can last forever.

I can't name them all!

To raise the child to as best they know how, to be the best example they can, and to teach them how to be independent.

to teach right from wrong, to instill morals and values, to love unconditionally, and the list goes on. No matter how many kids you have, or how mature you are, parnting is still a learn-as-u-go process. Think of it as on-the-job training.

A parent should care, love, help their children. Also prepare them for the future as well being there for them at times of need.
Hope that helps :-)

Too long to answer here, but...

A child subconsiously wants to emulate and become their parent (a child's greatest compliment) so be sure you ARE who you want your child to become.
