http is more like a public website for all to see and view...such as sites you find in search engines.

https is more like an intranet or extranet type websites where you are logging into a secured network or website and it takes you to the company's intranet server.

http runs on port 80 on the web server and allows for plain text transmission of content. (usually not good for sending info across the web but ok for browsing.)

https runs on port 443 and enables SSL (secure socket layer) which basically makes a direct connection to web server you are connected to and encrypts all the traffic so you can do banking enter credit card info etc. and no one that is monitoring your transaction can steal any of your info because it will look like binary garbage to them.

the s stands for secured. It means the information passing between your computer and the site is encrypted and relativly safe from prying eyes.
