I'm a Philadelphia Flyers fan - they are really getting off to a bad start this year - last night they lost to Buffalo 9-1. Ouch! Why is there so much scoring in NHL hockey? Seems like the rules after the lockout changed something, but I'm not enough of a fan to know exactly what. Is it enlarged offense zones? Is it that you can't crash into a player unless he has the puck?

Why so much scoring? Thank you.

Bigger offensive zones, no more two line pass penalties, golies not being able to play the puck in the corners. All makes for a faster (hopefully) higher scoring game. The NHL had to do something to compete with the other sports in an attempt to get a larger fan base.

All the rule changes really hurt teams defenses and helped the offense. The shrunken goalie pads made it so they had to be a lot better and there is more area for the defense to cover so there are much bigger passing lanes. Also, the players are getting better and there are much fancier passes and shots that actually work.

I'm a Sabres fan- I thnk theres more scoring bcuz of the players. All of the players r simply getting better in my books. It probaly is the bigger offense zones too, but i mainly believe it is the players getting faster.

Basically, players cant interfere with each other as much as they did. Last year was all about adjustment, and it continues this year, which explains the numerous amount of penalties.

Now that u cant interfere as much (by holding, hooking etc), it favours the faster players. So games are faster, there are more scoring chances, and as a result, more goals.

They didn't change the rules about clutching and grabbing to make the Americans happy. They changed the rules to help the skilled player so he can actually play the game instead of being held up. Mario Lemieux HATED the clutching and grabbing and he is Canadian.

They also decreased the size of goalies padding to make bigger targets to score on.

The refs are told to call everything to appeal to the US market. That's why you see the players biting their lips every few minutes because the calls are ridiculous...
