My toilet continues to fill the tank beyond the overflow tube, long after flushing. By manually lifting the float arm the fill valve turns off but once I let go of the arm, you can hear the water filling again. WHat do i do?

plum float is not going down so the water isnt going off. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TRY TO BEND ARM!!!!!!!!! u can buy a new one at home depot, but u should be able to find a skrew under-neath the floater on the pipe coming up from the main water into the tank. play w/ that and it might work but if it dosent u need a new one

Two choices:
1.) Try bending the arm on the float down. This will make the float go deeper into the tank and make the arm push harder/sooner on the valve to stop the flow of water.
2.) replace the ballcock valve.

I would suggest that you replace the ballcock in the toilet with a fill valve sold all day at home depot..I don't suggest bending the ballcock arm down you may break it and end up having to replace it anyway. So skip all the jack leg stuff and replace it with a new part to ensure proper operation and longevity!

There is no other adjustments on the float that you describe so the only adjustment there is is to bend the float arm down do this a little at a time till the water stops running. That is the way they were designed

The water will have to be shut off to the entire house. If you want a valves that won't break, use a brass shut off valves. They cost a lot more than plastic, but you will never have to worry about it.

Replace the old ballcock with a new Fluidmaster 400A fill valve. Quick cheap easy and the installation instructions are in the box.

a) if you are handy, bend the arm (with the bulb on it) down... GENTLY, which will cause the mechanism to shut off sooner
b) if you are not, call a plumber to fix it
c) if it's really old, let the plumber replace it with a new, non-float shutoff
