Elephants perceive how close something is to them trough their feet, (vibrations) that's the only reason why.
they are not really scare of mice. they just freak out.

Okay from what I have read its not so much that they are afriad its more to the point that mice sometimes have a habit of going up there trunk and it bothers them.

Same place that the idea came from that women are afraid of spiders.

Someone observed a single individual elephant that freaked out when it saw a mouse. Similarly, someone observed a single individual woman that freaked out when she saw a spider. That someone improperly made a stereotype based on the single observation.

I think they are easily startled but not actually afraid of mice in particular.
