well i can see being a benefit, i pretty much think it's a good idea. i mean we teach people self defense, (martial arts etc) teaching students how to disarm a gunmen isn't that bad. i mean honestly, if a gunmen does enter a classroom what are they going to do? call 911?

Hell yeah!!!! a whole classroom against one. I think that would discourage school shootings... lol!! Think about it. A school shooter is gonna shoot people regardless why the hell wouldn't ya fight back. He can't kill everyone if they are throwing all their desks and books at them right when they walk through the door. It's the opposite reaction they would hope for.... That's the kewlest **** I've ever seen. I'm sick of these pussy's that are like " eeewe don't fight back. They might hurt you" they are gonna hurt you anyway dumba$$ !!!! Why not go down fighting or take them down w/ you? I hate to break it to ya but this great nation was built on violence. As long as sin is in the world violence will be a part of everyday life.. Just look at the animal kingdom!!

That really is a waste of time and money. In the, say 5 or 6 seconds it takes for most of the class to realize this man is pulling out a gun (because any intelligent burglar wouldn't just walk in waving a gun around - he'd obviously want to conceal it at first), he could easily shoot four or five people. How the heck are students supposed to defend against a loaded gun with...books and staplers??? Unless the killer was a student, or even if he was, I doubt that students attacking would work. Possibly, you could have ten or fifteen kids trying to bombard him and hold his arms or something, but that would be just as dangerous a risk of lives, putting your students in front of the gun at practically point-blank range.

Did you mean IDIOCY? idiocracy is not a word.
It would be nice if you explained your reasons why you think it is idiotic.
On one hand, it is true that this type of action could result in injury or death, but on the other hand, do you expect them to just sit quietly and wait for the person with the weapon to wipe them out?
This question isn't quite as simple as you make it out to be.

They are signing death certificates. This is the most stupid thing I've heard of in a LONG time. The fact that parents are lettig kids take part is REALLY STUPID. I'm a teacher and I would not pay with my life by creating an even more hostile situation. I will not sacrifice myself and storm someone first or ask that a student does that...WOW!

WOOOOOWWW!!!!!

This is awesome!

I bet if everyone learned how to work together and use self defense tactics we wouldn't have to worry so much about people hijacking planes with things like box cutters!!!

Its good to finally see schools working to teach something that is practical outside fof genereal curriculum that also builds confidence and self esteem in a proactive way!!!

On the surface it appears to be a bad idea... but I think if you looked into it more deeply you wouldn't think so...

...that is, unless you agree with gun control...

I think we should build booby traps all over the school that can be activated once the students are in their classrooms. This way, if somebody enters the building without permission or the clearance code to deactivate the booby traps, they will be stabbed with poojee sticks and blown to smithereens by concussion grenades before they can even reach the gym.

It's about freaking time. I whole-heartedly agree with that. It's time to stop fearing guns and teach children that they have the right to defend themselves. This is an excellent program. More schools should adopt the same thing.

I don't think it's that bad. It's sad that it has to happen, but they're really just teaching the kids how to deal with a situation that, unfortunately, very well may occur. No different from a fire drill, if you really get down to it. At least they're starting to realize it's a problem that needs dealing with.

Actually, I think I do. With all the recent school shootings, I think students should at least know what to do if a classmate comes in with a gun. If it saves at least one person from each future school schootings, then it's a good thing.
