Sounds like the alternator is dying. This is probably the burning smell, poke your nose under the hood to see where the smell is strongest.
Happened to a 1993 Cavalier I had.It took a week to die fully.
Eventually the battery will give up.
When the alternator light is on the battery is not charging and it is running the car.
Get the alternator refurbished or replaced.
Probably not too expensive ($300 ?)

Good Luck !

Does it smell like burning hair..?
I had a Cavalier that did that, complained about it many times to the dealer and lo and behold... recall.. and then it didnt smell anymore.

Did you add any extra sound components etc.. that could also mess with your alternator...

Could just be a sensor (replaced 12 of those in the damn car) but check for recalls and make sure they were done.

Good luck!

Your alternator is basically cooking itself. The burning smell is the burning electrical components inside your alternator.

The clicking is probably the bearing going bad or the rotating parts inside your alternator hitting themselves causing excessive heat build up. Replace you alternator (and belt as it is probably a little crispy from the increased heat and drag) before you ruin your battery. CHECK YOUR BATTERY before or when replacing your alternator. A weak / bad battery can cause a repeat of the above!

Lastly, make sure all the major wire connections are clean and tight...Battery, alternator, fuse box and most importantly grounds!

Check to make sure your battery cables are tight, I have seen this many times on the cavalier. Been a mechanic for 7 years.
