the red dye helps u to identify the chromosome if u are looking at a cell for a meiosis or mitosis lab.
if u are looking at onion root tips, that are also there to make it constrat in colour against the backgroung
its like taging the parts of something that u want to see under the microscope

To be safe, get a clear plastic bag, garbage type, and line the tub. Some tubs, like porcelan, will stain, it will fade away, but it will take time. So, it's your call. You may have a stain for awhile, but with use and cleaning, the stain from red food dye will eventually wear off.
