In addition to the software needed to operate the iPod taking up some of the drive space, another thing to note is that with iPods, as well as ANY hard drive, for that matter, the advertised space is always larger than the actual space available. That's because some disk space is also used up in properly formatting the drive so that the data stored in it is organized in a retrievable manner.

the ipod software you have to install on it to make it work like an ipod, uses some of that 30gb of space in order to operate the ipod. my old school 20gb ipod only has 18.5gb's of free space available without any music on it. 3 gigs sounds like alot of space to be tying up with the ipod software but the software used on your 30gig is newer, and more complex. if its an ipod video that could explain the extra gigabyte usage. but yes, in summation the reason for you only having 27 free gigs of space is the ipod software using 3 gigs of your memory to run itunes. too bad. its the part apple fails to disclose to anyone purchasing an ipod.

HD space is usually rounded up. I am not sure if you are a mac or pc user.

I am a mac user, switched over from a pc user. I noticed that the files required to make the iPod function on a mac take up more space than on a PC
