Mudslinging is particularly popular in american politics because it is so effective. You may be surprised to know it tends to backfire in some other countries.

In any case, it works in the US. By 'works' you should realize that doesn't mean it moves people from voting democrat to voting republican (or vice versa). American elections are often determined by who is more able to get out their supporters. Mudslinging doesn't bring people to your side, but if it saps motivation on the other side, so less of their supporters bother voting, that can be the election.

It has worked in the past, just look at they die to John McCain one of their own, a war hero, POW, suffered through god only know what, trashed by George Bush, who evaded the draft by pulling stings and getting in the air guard. Look what they did to Kerry same thing, a decorated hero. Trashed him. Character Assassination is a mainstay for many repuglicans in their campaigns.

I wish all politicians were democrates. They are such honest and upstanding citizens. Plus, I just love giving my money away to people faking disability and women who won't use birth control.
