I recently purchased a (1) 60GB replacement mini hard drive (Lenovo Part No. 73P3358 )and (2) additional RAM (1GB PC2700 CL2.5 NP DDR SDRAM SODIMM; Lenovo Part No. 31P9834) for my Thinkpad X40 (2371HU1). This hard drive will replace the 40GB hard drive that came with my Thinkpad.

My Thinkpad had arrived with Windows XP pre-installed by IBM/Lenovo. As a result, I was never provided with a disk for the operating system.

I would be grateful for help with instructions for installing my new hard drive and RAM, such that I would be able to continue to retain my Windows XP operating system. Simpler instructions would be particularly appreciated. I am still quite new at this.

Thanks.

The X40 has a powered USB. ThinkPad X40 lacks an integrated optical drive, but its powered USB port makes it easy to add one, or you could add one via the media slice. Unfortunately, the X40 doesn't include a FireWire port. You can back everything up on a flash drive or remote hard drive.
A nice 250 GB (for $70) external drive like http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1538960&CatId=0
Of course your new 60 GB drive would be good enough if you could put it into another computer (like at the store you got it from)...

The reason why any copy of Microsoft Windows XP chews up hard drive space is that it has a huge database meaning that there are tons of drivers that get installed for differant items such as scanners, mice printers etc. That is why when you plug in a device such as a printer Windows XP automatically knows what device is pluged in to the USB port for examole. It's called Plug And Play. And thats why XP and Vista need so much space. God the others have no clue The Question Is why XP uses So Much Space?

You should be able to make your own recovery Media if you have a CD burner in the X4 Media slice of your X40. You cannot use a USB CDR for this operation...has to be in the "slice" you can mount to the X40...

You can use Lenovo's own free Rescue and Recovery program. Load it on your existing image, and burn off a copy of your image to CDR (which will take quite a few disks)

Rescue and Recovery can be downloaded from here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4Q2QAK
The first CD made will be bootable...with it, you should be able to mount your new drive, and then feed the newly burned recovery image to it, disk after disk.

Also, be sure to run this IBM/Lenovo tool against your system to make sure it is current:

You can also try calling the support center, tell them you bought a bigger drive, and see if they will be willing to send you a free recovery CD:

you cant install windows w/o a disc, but you can take it to a local computer store and ask them to mirror the old hard drive to the new one. That will preserve windows xp, and all of your data onto your new hard drive w/o wiping anything from your old one.
