I would have to say Daniel Day Lewis. It's almost impossible for that guy to make a bad film. He's incredibly diverse and he is very particular about the roles he plays. He turned down the part for Aragorn on LOTR. I was surprised to hear that his actual occupation is as a shoe cobbler in England. I think that the quality of his acting is very impressive for the few films that he has been in thus far. Most definitely one of the greatest actors today.

Some of my favorite films;

The Boxer
Last of the Mohicans
Gangs of New York
In the Name of the Father (Very good Film)

I don't think that it will ever be decided on who the greatest actor/actress ever was. Particular actors are better in certain genre of movies than others. I mean, could you ever picture Sly Stallone as 007 or Bruce Willis in Rocky?

Christian Bale.

He started as a child actor in the critically acclaimed Steven Speilberg film, "Empire of the Sun". While he's been in dozens of movies since then, most would feel he did his greatest breakout role in the film adaption of Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho, where he plays the main character, Patrick Bateman. Then for those who still hadn't heard of him, he recently played Bruce Wayne/Batman in last year's Batman Begins.

Why he is my favorite actor is because of the conditioning and preperation he puts into his roles. He worked himself into PRIME physical shape for the movie, American Psycho, that I spoke about above because his character was really into his own image.

Finally, I believe it was in 2004 that he came out with the movie The Machinist (limited theatrical release), a psychological thriller where his character is guilt ridden over a memory that he blocked out. He can't sleep, he can't eat, and it affects every area of his life. Bale, in preperation for that role, went from weighing around 180 lbs. or so to a DRASTIC 120 lbs.! I mean, he is SICKLY skinny in the movie! It is amazing to see.

All that and he is a terrific actor to boot!

So, he would definately be my choice!

Jimmy Stewart is the best actor ever,
though I don't really like some of his movies. It's not him though, he's great, it's the plot.
