I could maybe take a taxi for part of the way - maybe from Naperville to a metra station? Other than that I'm clueless about Chicago transport system. Any advice is much appreciated!

You can take a bus

The Pace bus runs to-and-from the metra train station. Those used to be a dollar per ride, but it was several years ago, and they probably raised their prices. There is probably a pace stop near your house. Go to www.pacebus.com for hours and more information. Those are yellow buses that look like school buses, but run much earlier.

Then take the metra to Chicago Union station. The ride to Chicago used to be $3.50 with student discount, but probably higher now.

Then walk couple blocks to Quincy/Adams El stop. From there, take either the brown or the purple line heading north to Fullerton stop. The brown train will say "Kimball" and the purple will say "Howard". However, the purple line runs only during the traffic hours, and travels the opposite direction from the brown. So be careful.

I am not sure about the red line since I rarely take the red. But I know the red line will get you to the Depaul campus as well. Once you get to Chicago, there are many options from the CTA buses, but try avoiding buses because sometimes, they never show up.

Being a fellow Chicagoian I would recommend taking the Burlington Northern Metra Train(the train in Naperville) into Union Station(Chicago). From there I would get on the Red Line El-Train. I believe you can get on the Red Line from Union. The Red Line will take you into Lincoln Park. The Brown line will to but, it is being renovated so I am not sure how operational the Brown Line is. You may have to walk a few blocks to the campus but, that should work. Go to transitchicago.com They have all the schedules and maps of all the El-Trains and buses that can get you to DePaul. I hope this helps. Take care.

Michael is right. Here's a bit more detail.
Take Metra from Naperville (try to catch the express runs) to the end of the line at Union station, then you will have to walk east (or cab) about 6 blocks east along Jackson or Adams to State St. There you catch the Red Line CTA (el, altho in the loop the redline is a subway, look for entrances every couple blocks along State) going North (to Howard). Take Red Line to Fullerton. Depaul Campus is right there just south and east of Fullerton el stop.

Why not take Metra's Burlington Northern Santa Fe Line to Union Station and when downtown take the Red Line (pick it up at Jackson, Monroe or Washington) to Fullerton. Voila -enjoy the beautiful campus.
