What is the best way to get people to visit my web store?

I have an established brick and morter store with an almost thirty year history.
I started my web store a year ago, and even though I have had more than a thousand hits , I have only made one sale.
This is a jewelry site.
Where should I advertise to attract customers and not just "tire kickers"?

Advertise on Yahoo Local, and also on Yahoo search.
Google adwords is also good.
