Republicans believe that all people have the ability to succeed with a little bit of hard work on their own part, and with very little assistance from the government. They believe the government's sole purpose is to provide safety to the nation's citizens, in order to secure our way of life. Sometimes, in the case of war especially, this means giving up certain aspects of our lives to ensure a beneficial end. After all, the end justifies the means.
Democrats believe the government's sole purpose is to give assistance to the nation's citizens, in every aspect of their lives. They believe all people need to work together to ensure that the people with no personal drive are not left behind. They want to tax heavily so they can use the citizens' money to provide for people who won't provide for themselves.

There are some basic differences in traditional positions; these are not necessarily reflected in the current politicians on either side.
Generally, republicans believe the federal government should be small, and that taxes should be low. They do not believe in giving federal aid to the poor or those in trouble; they believe in supporting business in the hope that businesses will hire the poor and the poor will get richer.
The democrats traditionally believe in caring for the poor by using tax money to set up programs like Medicare, and food stamps. They believe each person should share the burden of this, by having a graded tax system that takes more from the richer members of society. They include in this businesses as well as individuals.
However, in the last 20 years, things haven't worked out that way. Under Democratic presidents, the total public debt has gone down, while programs to help the poor have expanded, which means they spent the money more effectively.
In the same period under republican presidents, the debt has increased dramatically, and tax breaks and other favors done for business have not resulted in a decrease in the poor - in fact, the reverse has happened. Particularly in the last six years, there are now more poor, hungry, and uninsured children in this country than ever before.
The link below is to the US Treasury site, and will show you exactly what the national debt has been each year. Just look at the numbers and compare them to who the President was to figure out who's been doing the best job in the last 20 years. You need to study the "Debt Held By The Public" - that is the actual amount the government owes. You'll see this was trending down in the late 90's and now is surging upward.

You've just said the wisest thing I've read here in a very long time! There is REALLY no difference. They switch back and forth on issues and they're all equally as corrupt. ME? I pick on whoever is making a fool of himself or getting caught doing something corrupt. I feel that it's my civic duty to speak out against corrupt elected officials that betray the public's trust. Here in NYC, I've written articles in newspapers outlining some of the shenanigans by members of BOTH parties!
There are no true "people's candidates" any more. They're usually appointed the privilege to run for office in some smokey dark room somewhere by the party bosses, who are in turn told who nominate. The only thing we do is vote for the lesser of two evils, that's all we can do. There hasn't been a people's elected officials since the nation was formed; it's always been the super rich and powerful in control, and we've deluded ourselves in believing that this plutocratic republic is a democratic republic...! What's the difference? NONE! They're all corrupt liars and demagogues!
And there are fanatical fools on defending either side. Look at how they spew slogans and propaganda, call one another names and labels... without any understanding of what they're saying and without replying to the question. That tells you how many candidates there are for contraception less they multiply and continue to spread ignorance!

I wasn't aware that there was anything good about the current Republican party.
They are:
• against freedom of speech (remember the flap over their "free speech zones"?)
• for bigger government (crippling the FBI and CIA and giving us a silly, though great sounding, "Department Of Homeland Security")
• for torture (illegal war prisons)
• against privacy (wiretapping without warrants)
• against diplomacy ("you're either with us or against us")
• protecting child molesters (Mark Foley)
• supporting the rich rather than the poor (tax cuts that benefit the rich. If you support the poor you must be some kind of "FILTHY COMMIE!")
• running a deficit approaching TEN TRILLION DOLLARS. (They know it is the Democrat government elected in 2008 that will have to deal with it and they expect people to blame the economic collapse that will happen on the Democrats just because they're in office. They expect to get back into the White House in 2012.)
The only fault I can see in the Democrat party is that sometimes Democrats let their conscience get ahead of their common sense.
OH LOOK, A REPUBLICAN JUST DOWNVOTED ME! QUELLE SURPRISE!!

Basically, Democrats/Liberals believe that everyone should be free to do whatever they want to do, be it gay marriage, abortion, free healthcare, food and housing for the unemployed (welfare), and be free to say whatever anyone wants to say as long as it doesn't involve god, guns, or criticism of liberals. They need a large federal budget to provide people the means to do whatever they want to do, so they believe in high taxes.
Republicans/Conservatives believe in smaller government, that would be limited to national security, funding manger displays at christmas, jailing people for crimes against morality including drugs, homosexuality, and running a liberal newspaper. They need a large federal budget to stop people from doing things they don't want them to do, so they believe in high taxes.
Libertarians really do believe in smaller government, as it is nobody's business whether you smoke pot or own a firearm, and that the federal government should be limited to those things actually found in the text of the Constitution. Libertarians do not believe in penumbras, it sounds too much like a state religion. Since a federal government that stayed within the limits of the Constitution wouldn't be doing much, they do not believe in income taxes at all.

None. They have both become corrupted by big business interests.
Republicans are usually wealthy and pass laws that help the wealthy.
Democrats bash the wealthy but are wealthy themselves.
