Was there an actual child molestation charge or was it inappropriate behaviour on the internet? Did he actually molest any of those pages? Now I don't agree with his behaviour but did he actually break a law? The law I see broken if any was solicitation of a minor.

Make one other thing clear I am a Dem. This is a question for discussion not bashing.

It is very early in the process. If the federal investigation shows that he tried to lure a Minor under the age of consent to a meeting for sexual purposes then he will probably be prosecuted. The age of consent in Washington DC is 16. It is higher in some other states and if either Foley or the minor were in one of those states when any meeting was attempted (or he attempted to set one up) then it is a criminal offense.

It is also unclear as to whether or not he physically molested anyone. there are allegations that there might have been one physical sexual encounter. That is still being investigated.

I too lean democrat but I do not see this as a Republican issue. It would be ludicrous to suggest (as some have done) that this taints the Republican party. The only party wide problem may be the way the case was handled from the start. It will be interesting to see what that investigations shows.

For those that keep mentioning Franks and Studds. Yes, I think they got off easy. No, I do not condone what they did either. However, the acts they committed do not in any way excuse Mr. foley nor the attempts to protect him. We all need a dose of reality here people. The issue isn't trying to point the finger at one party or another. If we do that we are doing exactly what the irresponsible folks in power (both parties) are doing. The issue is it is an absolute disgrace that we cannot seem to protect young people in the United States Capitol building. From members of the United States Congress!!
That's the issue. Anyone harrassing these young people and anyone protecting their behavour instead of the pages needs to go. And they need to go now!!!

He is definitely getting off easy. Here in IL, if an adult attempts to lure a minor into a sexual situation over the internet their house will be raided, evidence will be collected and they will go to jail. Equlivent evidence against anyone else to that which Foley has admitted would have found them convicted and registered as a sex offender by now. These pages are aspiring politicians and therefore, if he had actual sex with any of them, they are highly unlikely to report it for fear of their future political careers. Where there's smoke, there must be fire. Nobody just chit chats online for 6 years with teens in a sexual way without acting on this sick and twisted impulse. The man needs to go to prison and learn what sexual violation is all about.

I despise anyone who would take advantage of a minor in any way. Is he getting off easy? I'd have to say no. He's going to be a pariah for the rest of his life and a really sad footnote in history. He's lost his job and most of his support. Truthfully, the thing that ticks me off the most is when anyone in a position of power abuses that power by exerting undue influence over those who serve under him, kind of like Clinton. The difference is she was an inexperienced young woman and Foley's victim was a teenager.

Foley did not commit an actual "crime" he just behaved inappropriately. The FBI can find no actual physical relationship between Foley and any Page. Further, the e-mail/IM's were sent after they left the program and they were above the age of consent (whether you agree with the age or not.). There's no crime to charge him with. Being a perv is not necessarily a crime.

If he were just another citizen it would be different. I'm not saying that's right, but it is so. Besides, do you ever think he would be re-elected? He is shameful to blame this on substance abuse and being abused by a priest as a child.

What really grinds my gears is that he is cementing the erroneous idea that many conservatives have that gays are child molesters. That is not born our by statistics, that almost all pedophiles are not homosexual.

Well, I don't know the details, but he was going after young people. At the very least he is guilty of that. If they found that he acted inapproriately, then he needs jail time. Either way, he is someone who needs to be constantly watched so he doesn't go after young people again. And, how do we know who much time he spent on his little hobby at work before he got caught??
