I'd suggest English literature, but if you like both of them, see if you can find the American literature book online. Sometimes, you'd be surprised how cheap you can find them for!

Get the English Literature first. You will learn more starting with it and adding the American Literature later.

That would be a hard choice for me to make too! It's really a personal preference, but I would lean more towards english literature simply because it has a longer history and a basic understanding of english lit can help out when studying american lit.

I'd highly recommend the English Literature History book...
Buy it for now, and keep in mind that you'll buy the other one soon.

I'd go for the English lit, if only for the Byron and Shelley alone...
Not that I don't love the US, but the Romantic period was just so well interpreted in Brit Lit....

I would have definitely gone in for english literature. i feel it's far more enriching. besides, most of the classic novelists are brits.(jane austen, g heyer..)
