"Thanks. I appreciate your concern."
And, by the way, I'm sorry about your miscarriage.

Thank you is always the polite thing to say. Then add something personal that the person you are speaking with might done for you and family during the time of the lost, such Thanking them for stopping by, or for the card, flowers or food. But mainly for their concern.

This is a good question. My grandfather passed and people I barely knew would say "We are so sorry." I always said thank you, but in the back of my mind I couldn't help but wonder if they really were? Maybe I just heard it so many times that it really had lost its value with me. I would just stick with Thank You. Even though you may want to smack them.

The best answer is simply, "Thank you". We lost my parents-in-law within six months of eachother and people were just saying I'm Sorry a zillion times. It is far more graceful, and it relieves the awkward feelings by just thanking them. They don't know what to say to you any more than you know how to hear it.
Best of luck to you.

They aren't apologizing. "I'm sorry" in this case means I feel sorry about your loss. Just say thank you or thank you for your concern.

It's hard enough for them to think of what they could possible say to you since they can't possibly know what you're going through, so just say "Thank you". They really don't expect you to say anything else.

Just say thank you for your concern. Trust me, it is hard on the people offering the condolences as to what to say too.
