Schloss Neuschwanstein is in Munich. It is the castle that Disney castles are designed after. It is gorgeous!!
If you look up Munich travel, the castle is often included. An hour is not a long time to travel to see something that gorgeous. When you are touring somewhere, would you turn something amazing down because it is an hour away?

If I were you I'd go to Munich. The city is REALLY really beautiful. I love it. You can go to the Marienplatz where there's the city hall.
There are also some old nice buildings or the famous church of Munich.
I#m living 40 km away from Munich, but I have never been to Berlin, which is pretty embarrassing^^ Berlin is also a nice city, but you don't have any possibilities to go hiking or stuff like that.
I hope you'll have a nice stay in Munich...
Bye and cya

Munich is just a huge town with: restaurant, nightlife and accommodation entries, with hotelbye , you could have a look. Munich may be the capital town of Bavaria and the third-most populous city in Germany. For generations the seat of the Dukes, Electors, and Leaders of Bavaria, the Munich Residenz is without question among Europe's many magnificent palaces. Organized around seven large courts, the great resident complicated comprises three major portions: the Königsbau, fronting into Max-Joseph-Platz; the Alte Residenz, experiencing Residenzstrasse; and the Festsaalbau (Banqueting Hall) overlooking the Hofgarten. The first section with this large complicated to be created was the superb Antiquarium, built-in 1579 and today part of the excellent Residenz Museum. Munich is a town with lots of record, be sure to discover it whole.

First thing, the Fairy Tale castle you almost always see in travel Posters for Germany IS NOT in Munich. The castle is located south of Munich and depending how you get there(bus, train, car) it will take you about an hour to get there. The plus of visiting in January is that castle and the others nearby will have less tourists.
Another point; Both cities are cold in January, unless of course you happen to be from Alaska. So, bring warm clothing and good shoes, boots, or sneakers for walking. In either city you visit if you want to see anything you will have to walk a bit.
Which city is better? I have visited both, and let me put it this way; They both have something to offer. Munich(Muenchen in German) is the capitol of Bavaria where the real Oktober Fest takes place. Many people there dress in the traditional Bavarian clothing(think Heidi or Sound of Music). NOTE: That type of clothing is not typical for the rest of Germany. Munich has the beer halls, English Garten(a bit cold for that in January), museums, red light district, and is tourist friendly. There is a large walking plaza thru the center of the city with great shopping and tourist stuff - large churches, old city hall with a musical clock that all the tourists love to watch.
Both cities have excellent mass transit systems.
Berlin is the capitol of Germany with lots going on. It does not have a center like Munich, but the 'KuDam' is the main avenue with lots of shopping and touristy things like the bombed ruins of a church that is a memorial. Berlin has a section called Museum Island that you you could easily spend days at. I like movies so I always visit the Berlin Film Museum near Patsdamer Platz. Finding the Berlin Wall will be a search since the city was in such a rush to unify, that the wall disppeared real fast. But, Check Point Charlie is still there with a museum near by. Berlin has lots of clubs/discos, bars for every taste, jazz, techno, whatever.
If you want to be the typical tourist then Munich is the city(think Washington DC). If you want touristy with more fun possibilities then Berlin would be the place(think New York City)
I have lived in Germany for 19 years. In Munich I can sit in a beer hall listening to German country music and have a great time. In Berlin I can go to a great hardcore techno club til 4 in the morning, then head over to 'Die Schwartze Cafe' for a snack.
Both cities are fun, it just depends on what you wanna see and do. Good Luck and have a good visit.

In Munich there are greater chances for a winter wonderland, and there are nice day trips from the city to the famous castles, or for a day skiing in the Alps! Can be very romantic!
However, if you want to party, have the greatest diversity in shopping, restaurants, clubs and people, you should go to Berlin. Lots of history/sightseeing as well. From there you can also make a day trip to close-by Potsdam -which is a large castle complex that you can tour.

I would strongly recommend you to go to Munich. It is a beautiful town with a lot of old buildings with very interesting architecture. As one knows, Munich is the capital of Bavaria and there are a lot of sightseeing to do in Bavaria. If one is in for skiing, there are so many nice resorts to go to. I think that one will see a lot of snow in January. To find more information about Munich, do check the following websites:

My opinion is that Berlin is better than Munich. There is so much to see and do, you will NOT be bored. I spent 4 days there in April, and am looking forward to my next trip. I have been to Munich several times, and wasn't impressed.
