I saw the voting for one of these (100 Greatest Pieces Of Celebrity Bellybutton Fluff or something). They'd already picked the 100, and it was just the order you voted on (pick your favourite five out of the 100).
Sometimes, the "recollections" are clearly directed, e.g. in one of the "I love year X", where for some reason everyone recalled preferring Mega Drive to Super Nintendo, and made the claim that people wouldn't even admit to owning a SNES. Just because the producer was an idiot that can't admit that Mario is better than Sonic, doesn't mean that they should pick and choose to show one side of the argument. Besides, they had fake newly filmed "archive" footage on that show.
So, they're a good no-brain dip into retro telly, but not exactly a scientific poll or an accurate record.

I think the channel 4 top 100 eg movies etc. they are for fun though and they are not very accurate of what people would choose on a big scale. I hate the way when voting for your fav they give you just 100 of eg. songs, kids shows, comedians to choose from. They should have a larger number to choose from and let people put in something that may not be there in the 100 and who chooses the 100 anyway????
I feel at times the people choosen to coment on stuff on the show are answering partly from a script and not accuratley their true memories.

I think they are just for fun. Some poor researcher probably has the job of thinking up 100 of...whatever it is & then they just list them any old way.

It's just a way of taking up 2 hours of tv because they have nothing worth showing. Who votes for these things? I've never been asked. Have you?

these programmes are representative of people who watch a certain tv channel and who decided to submit a vote.

I don't think they are too credible. I just take them as being just for fun and I don't read that much into them.
