Where are some good places in Illinois where small bands can peform?

Try Chicago. There are about 50 bazillion bars that are looking for bands to play. Get a demo tape together and start sending it out. walk into a few bars that you know have live music and ask what you have to do to get booked there. Chicago is one of the music capitals of the U.S. so it would be to your advantage to try and get into the scene here.
In other parts of, I guess college town bars and such. But it depends on what type of music you play. For instance, if you get a gig in a bar in Mokena and play goth music, I doubt it would go over real well. Chicago has places for every type of music.
