I live in the UK and want to phone my relatives in Canada. My mum pays the computer bill in my house and I've just joined SKYPE. I can't persuade her that it's free to phone our relatives abroad. She says there must be a catch somewhere. What can I tell her? And how does SKYPE make a profit and stop itself from going out of business?

Skype is free between skype phones but it costs to ring land lines and mobiles -

They make their profit from:
Calls to proper phones
Advertising on their site
They also save money cause its all internet based so do not have very much infrastructure to maintain

The good news is that as long as your calling someone with a pc that has skype installed on it then the call is free. There are only charges when u call local lines and international mobile. Here where skype make there money from and also from the ton of advertising they get. Skype is not the only software that does that yahoo also does the same thing free. But note both of u most have internet connection and a pc between each other.

They had a promotion a couple of months ago and all their computer to land line calls in the US were for free. I think the promotion was from US to Europe land lines as well. Skype make their money form people who sign up for a phone number with them. You may want to check their website

SKYPE is free...for some things.

On www.skype.com you can open your own account and put some credit on it(for example 10€).You will get your own PC number.
With that money you can call from PC to TELEPHONE(anywhere).
Calls from PC to PC are free and aren't not charged at anytime and anywhere. If you friend or relative has SKYPE program(non-paid or paid)then you can call him/her on his/her SKYPE for free.
If you want to call from computer to telephone then you will need to open an account.I must say that PC-TELEPHONE calls are much cheaper then TELEPHONE-TELEPHONE calls so I recommend you SKYPE.
