I can certainly tell the average age of the other persons answering your question as most of them don't have a clue what a bomb shelter is or how one is constructed.
Back in the 50's there was this same feeling that alot of people are having now and there were MANY people having bomb shelters built in their backyards,course the type of bombs they were worried about back then werent as bad as the ones of today.
These shelters have to have special walls, special air system ,water system and waste disposal system not to mention storage space for food and clothing,etc one would need because IF that one special bomb does hit,there is no telling how long one would have to stay in there before the world be safe again to reenter.
The cost of this for an individual would be more than the average homeowner could afford and that is why there are public bomb shelters.
I smile when I read the solution of putting a target on the roof but they do pose a valid concern.

I am not going to buy a bomb shelter. instead I am going to put my energy into devising a huge target for the roof of my house so that when the Bomb finally falls I will be killed outright & not just maimed.

make it in your basement out of cement. dont bother, the bombs they use nowadays will pierce through most home made or home bought shelters anyways, sit back and enjoy the show.....for that last second.

In the USA walmart stocks them in larger branches. In the UK try mail ordering them from the states.
