There is far more goodness than evil. As an example (and I saw this is the Metro newspaper this morning) think of ebay - now bear with me on this - the vast majority of transactions that take place on ebay are carried out to the satisfaction of both parties.

Most people deal honestly and fairly with complete strangers when using ebay - if there was more evil than good in the world then something like ebay could never work - everyone would be selling stolen or non-existent goods or lying about the non-appearance of expected items.

ebay answers a question in philosophy! A world's first?

The good and bad of the world are supposed to be 50%each at a balanced level on which the creation stabilises. This is because if every thing is good then the world would turn into heaven. If every thing is bad it will become the hell.
This is the reason why Lord said in Gita
When ever the balance of good and evil changes adversely(evil more than good) I manifest myself to redeem the balance.

I honestly believe there is more goodness.

So much that we simply don't see it anymore. Bad stuff stands out like a sore thumb.

For example if you have a 20x20 canvas and you spatter it with yellow paint, on average you may have 100,000 spots, dots, splats of yellow paint then, you take blue paint and spatter it once, you may have 50-100 spots, dots and splats of blue paint, with some green smears.

Overall its a yellow painting right?

I just don't think we appreciate everything that's good as good anymore. Even listing it here would be corny and subjective.

Example: A bumblebee on a sunflower.

Some people are allergic to bees and flowers, some are deathly afraid of bees, some can't stand sunflowers, and would prefer a daisy, some people would rather see a dog chasing a frisbee.

I like the bee.

Maybe more people see the green smears than anything else.

So, what is good?

this is a hard question to answer, because it depends on your own view of the world. On one hand look at the daily murder's across the globe, wars, plagues, and famine. But on the other hand look at all the volunteer work, happy families, and the world. The rainforest's, desert, mountains, cities, glaciers and lots of others. Of course what you consider good is up to you, but i think that there is a lot more good in the world than bad. The world is a beautiful place and we must keep it that way for the future generations to enjoy. (sorry, i kinda drifted off the subject there)

Well yes there is more goodness, look around you the simple greeting of a passing stranger or some lad standing up for an elderly lady on the bus letting the lady behind u go first in the ques even when u need to get home!!! yes there is all this badness but they are Big bangs that stun us and not the small acts of kindness and goodness we encounter thru the day!!!

Socrates said that the world of the happy man is different to the world of the unhappy one.

In this sense, it does depend on your perspective.

More interestingly, Satre said that good, bad, right, wrong require man to have been made for a purpose, as man makes a knife for a purpose. The knife has essence before existence (you decide what you want an object to do, and then make an object to do it.) Man is unlike a knife in that its existence preceeds it's essence. We exist, before we have a purpose. Even if we do have a purpose, we are not aware of it. Even if God came to us an told us, we would still have a choice - unlike the knife.

Satre said we are condemned to be free: free to choose. There is no right, no worng, no good, no bad - only choice.

To return to Socrates, what do you choose? The answer to your question lies in how you choose to live. How you choose to live will determine the way you see the world around you.

In summary, your eyes and brain are linked to who you are, not to the world.

Unless you are a believer of some sort, goodness and badness cannot coexist.

Unless your talking in abstracts goodness has no opposite.

Love is not its opposite.

Goodness springs from right action. Not as in, its right because someone thought it, says it.

Right in the sense, no choice, only action.

What is more important than right or wrong or bad is what is.

What is the actual situation in the world, not judge or name or condemn but to observe without distortion the reality.

Only then will the right action be realised from which goodness will naturally flow.

I think there is more goodness in the world. From the "Good Morning" from a stranger to someone holding open the door for you. The is a lot of bad in the world but I think it is all how you look at it. People think that blowing up Americans is going to send them to Heaven and that God will love them for it. Although they are out of their mind crazy they think that they are doing good. Good and Bad are marked by society. I think most people in their own mind have good intention and are just using their upbringing of what is good and what is bad to make the decisions they make.

I like the response of "It depends on what you want to see." There is much truth to that.

If you want to see negative you will but one only has to open their eyes to see the positive around us. Just look in this forum and you will find a lot of jackasses but you will also find a lot of people who genuinely want to help others.

It is the small and often overlooked things that makes this world a wonderful place to live. Such as the neighbor that shares what he/she grows in the garden every year. The mystery box filled with food that shows up on someone's porch at Christmas. The little league coach that takes your son along with his family to the high school football game. I could go on but I can't be here forever.

The question is... how much goodness do you spread around?
