It is a great sport and one that requires strength, stamina and coordination. It is also very dangerous.

My first answer would be no. In a sport there is usually a point system between two teams. One side versus the other. In cheerleading who are you versing? The opposing cheerleaders? Who is keeping score with whose cheers are best?
On the other hand cheering can be very physical and demanding. There is a cheerleading competition on ESPN every year or so,so it could be argued that it is a sport. Injuries happen and cheerleaders practice every day. There are even girls who get cut from the squad because they can't cut it. But the ultimate reason would have to be that most people don't accept cheerleading as a sport. If they did, then every fan sitting in the bleachers would be an athlete.

Most people think of sports as competition. But is it?
Often sport is the performance of athletic moves.

Diving is considered a sport by some because it requires athletic moves. Yet ballet, which is just as demanding is considered an art. There is no ballet sport that I am aware of. The argument against diving and gymnastics is that the winner is judged to be the winner. It's not like winning a race.

But if you're not running a race, is running a sport? When I jog, outside of competetion, am I performing a sport?

Certainly Cheerleading requires athletic maneuvers. There are cheerleading competitions. The judging of these competitions is subjective. Therefore they are as much of a sport as diving and gymnastics.

A sport is athletic competition. I think to limit sport to athletic events which don't require subjective measurements is a little silly. Referees make subjective measurements even in racing, even in football and baseball -- balls and strikes are subjective.

If subjectiveness excludes an athletic competition from being a sport, goodbye football, goodbye baseball, goodbye soccer and welcome to the world of competitive dance!

Yes, it is a sport. Especially when it's an athletic competition.

sideline cheerleading is NOT a sport, you are leading the cheers of the fans, that would say being a fan is a sport. On the other hand, competitive cheerleading is MORE of a sport. But I see it more as a competition. If you have no first hand outcome on the results of the score, (judges) it falls under a competition, now there is another arguement, is a competition a sport?
sport= football, baseball, basketball
primary competition= hotdog eating, situps
secondary competition= xgames, gymnastics, lol american idol
is that good?

YES!! Correct me if I'm wrong but, isn't E.S.P.N the sports channel? So.. why do the televise all star cheerleading competitions? Cheerleaders tumble, stunt , yell, use flexibility, dance, build muscles, ECT. All while doing a exhilarating routine in 2 minutes 30 seconds!! LETS see you people who don't believe cheerleading is a sport to do 1/2 the stuff cheerleaders do. Give the respect cheerleaders deserve!! =]

Lets see you do this!!:

As a former cheerleader yes I think of it as a sport. I consider it to be along the same lines and ice skating and gymnastics. You have a certain amount of time to perform a choreographed performance and are scored based off of judges opinions. If you consider those a sport then you should consider cheerleading a sport as well. It's all along the same lines.

It is not a sport but more like a part of some sports. Who knows in the future it could be a sport to see which girl or girls the best, like you.

Well I think it depends on the type of cheerleading that you do. Standing on the sidelines simply shouting out cheers is not a sport it's being a fan. If you do the acrobatic stuff and go to competetions then it is a sport.

It's a sport because it involves vigorous activity, now some of you may think it's not but I knew many cheerleaders who trained very hard by running miles a day and lifting weights so they could perform there stunts.
