Theres a good reason why concerned scientists in pondering the paradox of plutonium use the metaphor of the greek myth of Prometheus, who upon stealing the "fire of the gods" was punished by being chained to a rock where each day would be spent suffering an eagle pecking out his liver, and each night, having the liver restored, to go thru it all over again. Radioactive materials are a self-limiting contradiction like yeast growing in liquor mash, eventually, the byproduct alcohol kills the fermenting yeast. All mankind will be stopped by the very nature of the nuclear weapons, power, and materials, with the inevitable destruction which came with the "deal with the devil". The only hope for human survival is to send all nuclear materials off earth, into the Sun, and send those who accept nukes back to the devil for a refund.

As of now we dont have any other alternative than nuclear power for the rising electricity demands. It has zero emissions, the greenest energy option known to mankind. The total lifecycle emissions from a nuclear power plant is much less than that from even a wind power plant of similiar capacity. (The life cycle emissions include the materail, manufacture etc).

Regarding the nuclear weapons- It is the saddest thing that a form of energy so friendly and useful to mankind can be used for devastating destruction. So, let us move towards an earth with no weapons of mass destruction.

In a perfect, non-violent, world disarming and/or deactivating each and every countries nuclear weapons program would be brilliant. Unfortunately, however, we do not live in such a world. There are just entirely too many testosterone-driven idiots out there (example: Kim Jong il) who are hell-bent on possessing as much power and control as they can. Possessing nuclear arms is just another foolish way of asserting their dominance and boosting their egos.

Now that the cat is out of the bag so to speak, to return to a non-nuclear status is not realistic. Perhaps in many ways, nuclear power generation produces less environmental problems than fossil fuels. One might contend that the greatest danger of nuclear war is related to a terrorist use of a nuclear device.

That is an excellent idea. But do you think it is possible with diverse aims and uses of nuclear power, some of which are permisable like domestic improvement purposes. Nuclear war heads are to be avoided but under the guise of peacful use many countries are clandestinely acquiring war weapons.

Nothing wron with nuclear power if you follow the rules. We have a good number of nuclear power stations in the USA.

absolutely, but unfortunately we messed ourselves up by inventing nuclear explosives in the first place. No matter what we do now, we will never be able to get rid of them forever and there will always be a risk. The best thing to do is to try to leave them with people you trust with insane security. North Korea though I wouldn't include in the people to handle them. Sorry North Korea but your govt. seems far too risky to be trusted with nuclear bombs right now.

Why are you guys so worked up about nuclear bombs? Why not pressure your own government to stop the spread of landmines. The US is one of a few countries in the world still using and manufacturing landmines. Princess Dianna fought hard to get people to stop this.

They should but it's impossible. Once a nation discovers how to make nuclear weapons, you can't take away that knowelage.
