Nightclubs were very popular in cities. People went out dancing at clubs or to ballrooms. Dancing was hugely popular. I read a diary by a guy who lived in NYC in the thirties and forties and he would go to see broadway plays and go to the opera, go to museums and baseball games, to the beach--same type of stuff we do today. Listening to music and plays on the radio was very popular in the thirties.

They would have parties at each other's homes, dinner parties. They would have bridge clubs and play cards at each other's homes. When television first became available, they would invite people over to watch it because it was such a novelty (although the diary guy thought it was boring after an hour and thought it hurt conversation).

People read a lot more than now-- books and magazines, back when magazines had a lot of short fiction and serial novels in them. Movies were extremely popular. Ladies had sewing circles and quilting bees. People traveled over longer periods of time-- the diary guy took three whole months to tour Europe (but he quit his job to do it, then had to find a new job).

Movies were number 1 in popularity during the time frame you mentioned, followed by dancing to live bands, and then juke joints in the South.
