Hi I'm a HVAC tech. If the pilot is lighting then we know that gas is getting to the gas valve and that the gas valve is opening. The problem is that the pilot won't stay lite. Simple maybe Replace the thermocouple. This device is very inexpensive about $5.00 and very easy to install doesn't come with instructions though! Oh and make sure that you have a thermocouple or and ignitor. Some newer FP's do have ignitors..Hope this helps!

Check and see if all lines are open to begin with. If there is no flow of gas to the pilot, then it will not light. If there is one, then stop what you are doing and call the gas company, if you do not know enough about how to light a pilot light, then back away from the highly volitile gas. An ignition of natural gas can kill you. Neighbor of mine literally blew himself to pieces lighting a gas grill OUTSIDE. Sometimes it is worth the extra money to pay a professional to do the job, than to know that you could have saved a lot heartache, pain and misery.

If the other two suggestions don't work. It could be a bad thermocouple. It's a small copper tube that senses heat and lets the gas valve open.

turn off the gas,
use a pin, or something similar, and put in in the pilot lite hole,
it may have dust or residue in it.
try to clean it best you can, and try it again....
if not, It may have air in the gas line,
and thats gonna be a matter or keep lighting it till it gets through....
( this is assuming the gas valve is all the way open.)

Sounds like you have dust or dirt in your unit. Use "Air Buster"or any air spray and blow the dirt and dust out of the pilot light area.
"Air Buster"is canned air that you clean your computer with.
, other wise use air from a air compressor.
