emotional pain is often worse than physical pain because our body's are resilient and capable of healing physical pain quickly, therefore the state of physical pain is usually temporary.

On the other hand our minds are most complex structures, and are capable of storing our singular memory's upon multiple locations with in our brains, and each time we attempt to deal with a stored memory the questions ultimately arises, Why does this memory hurt so much, which in turn invokes more stored memory's as we attempt to retrieve all of the details related to the memory.

With respect to all of the stored memory's then with in our mind regarding any particular painful emotional issue, we must sort out all of the memory's, not only verbal things which were said to us, but also the non verbal communications which we registered and stored as memory's with in our minds, and then we must make sense of it all, and justify our judgment regarding the particular matter so that we may find peace through understanding.

Once this happens we come to multiple conclusions with regard to our memory's, and much like yahoo answers, there are many choices to these complex issues, which in turn we must choose the correct response through good judgment.

The bottom line is that this process for dealing with emotional pain can often take years, or whole life times, where physical pain does not, and in some instances there are persons whom turn to drugs, or alcohol to suppress the emotional pain because they just do not wish to deal with it, although their actions only postpone the inevitable, as there suffering continues until they have dealt with it properly.

The point that Patrick Lewis is trying to get across is that emotional pain cuts deeper than physical pain does. He gives three examples of things that can cause physical pain (i.e. knife, axe, guillotine) and then compares them to a papercut through the soul. I think what he is trying to say is that perhaps writing his feelings down on paper helps him liberate his soul, or perhaps old love letters from a first love haunt him? There are many things that this poem could relate to. I've given you my input, now it's up to you to work with it. Good luck.

Physical pain will eventually go, but mentally the pain will remain and may never heal, due to the strength of emotion. Emotion is a much more powerful weapon instead of knives and axes.

Physical pain is finite...it has a beginning, an and ending point. As for your premise, that things written down are worse & linger, you may have a point. But as you age with wisdom, you will learn that, Fools Despise Wisdom.
So, to keep it simple, "Don't Let the Swine Get You Down"

AGREE to Disagree, and you won't get bent out of shape.

because physical pain has actual physical limits that the body can regulate in the brain by either tolerating it at certain levels, blocking it out completely, or by having some sort of drug administered so as to ease it......emotional pain is regulated by our hearts and our brains together....usually because of a desire or need that has not been appeased we have emotional pain and we tend to allow ourselves to feel this with any degree of affect because even though its not pleasant it is tolerable....for example...would you rather have someone call you ugly or would you rather have someone smash your thumb with a hammer?one is emotional and one is physical but i bet youd pick the emotional one because you can control it...

Here's another poem:

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me.

I think there are all kinds of physical pain though. Like an ice cream headache. Those are pretty bad.

Don't let people do your homework for you! What do you think the poem means? You're cheating if you use someone else's opinions. You already have some ideas about the poem-use those. I don't think your dumb so don't use someone else's ideas.
