Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Upstart Guide Owning & Managing Bar or Tavern by Roy S. Alonzo
* Start Your Own Bar and Tavern (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Ups) by Entrepreneur Press
* The Food Service Professionals Guide to Bar & Beverage Operation: Ensuring Maximum Success by Chris Parry

depends on so many factors
localtion, taxes, drinks, suppliers, building costs, staff costs, the average startup cost can be about $100,000 to $250,000 but this depends on the size of the bar.

If you are starting from scratch and have a location, I would think that you would have to put out $10,000 for the rent, overhead, and inventory costs. Ins. would be very high for liability and such.
I could go on and on...but you see how it goes...
