Actually, professional athletes are paid little compared to the VAST revenue that the franchises and leagues take in, although it may seem to us regular people that they make too much for merely playing a game.
When you look at the athletes as commodities (which they actually are in the whole scheme of things), it all becomes quite disgusting. In professional sports, we have a gladiator/owner relationship that's elevated to another level. The leagues and the franchise owners would not have this money if it were not for the gladiators who provide the excitement and entertainment. The athlete's salaries are tiny fractions of the amount that the leagues and owners collect from the athlete's efforts.
When your debate opponent brings up the argument about grown men being paid too much to play a game, do a little research on the revenue that sports bring in for the host cities, stadiums/arenas, the league and the franchise and compare this revenue to the players' salaries. You'll be horrified.

If you think about it, what do sports player do? Train all the time, workout there body until complete perfection just to play a game they love. Also what they do for us. They give just entertainment, happiness, great time in front of the TV with friends, going out to a ball game. It is a great time. Can we put a price on happiness? During the Great Depression people had very little money yet they rather go see a movie or a ball game than buy food because it makes them happy. its it fair that sport player get paid more than doctor? a doctor save lives one person at a time. In 1997, Mark McGwire he hit a major league-leading 58 homers for the season. when he walk out of the dug out to raise a cap for us, that feeling to million of people watching is priceless. I still remember that moment. Would pro sport palyer do it for less money? I believe they would, but sport organization want them more so they give them more money.

They are paid too much. Scientists and teachers, and anyone else who contributes to society are more beneficial to the world than sports players. All they do is play sports. What would happen if their career ended because of an injury. They would probably be flipping burgers for a living. I say give more money to charity and to people who contribute to society.

No you pay for the ticket and merchandise it s our faults. Also you can argue why do rock stars, actors, and actresses get paid so much. We want to see them entertain us. That is where their pay comes from and I believe until we stop watching these games it won't stop. Look at hockey because of how low attendances were the players were forced to take a ct but ntil then they will keep getting paid.

Yes. I mean, teachers contribute more to society, and without them, or any other public service, our economy would have failed by now. Sports athletes get paid more than almost 5 years of a teacher or cop's salary, when others work much harder for their pay.

They make what the market bears. People are evidently willing to pay the sponsors that pay the players.
Ergo, they aren't paid too much.

I don't think you can ever be paid too much. Only as much as your business thinks your worth.
