I've been playing bassoon since fifth grade and have always heard people say it is a hard instrument to play. Since I've never really played anything else, I don't have anything to compare the difficulty to. Does anyone know what about the bassoon really makes it hard, and moreso, what makes it harder than other instruments?

the fact that it is reed instrument, compounded with the fact that it is big, takes a lot of air, and a strong set of lips to play long periods.

I played a bassoon for a number of years, the only thing I can figure is maybe lip placement on the reed. You know how awful it can sound if the reed is dry or your lips placed wrong. Maybe the odd fingering? I don't think its harder than other instruments, just not as 'mainstream' as like drums or guitar or flute. I started playing just because at the time it was one instrument that didn't interfere with my orthodintics (ha ha) and it was a really cool sounding instrument that NO one else played in my school :)
Just my humble opinion.
