make sure your desktop can connect to your wireless router via a card or whatever, then go to the control panel on your desktop and if using win xp, run the wireless network setup wizard, pretty self explanatory.

Does the desktop have a wireless card or just a plain old Ethernet NIC?

If it has a wireless card already installed, simply turning it on within range of the router and going to “Network Connections” in the control panel will show your Wireless Connection.

You want to make sure the card appears as an icon in this window and says “enabled” below it. If it says “disabled” which some new computers might, right click the icon and choose “enable” from the menu. Double clicking the icon might make a screen pop up asking you which network you want to connect to – choose the one that belongs to your router in the list. Now you’ll be online.

If it doesn’t have a wireless card, you can go to “Network Connections” and see if any icons say “Local Area Connection”. This probably means you have a NIC installed. For this setup you need a CAT 5 Ethernet cable and be sure your router has additional ports on it to connect the computer.

Once you have the wires connected, check the Network Connections screen for a Local Area Connection. Be sure it is enabled and then double click it. Click the “Support” tab and look at the IP address. For a home LAN it would probably start with a 192.168… If it has 0’s or unavailable, try clicking the “repair” button. If all else fails, turn off the computer, disconnect power to the router and wait 30 seconds. Reconnect the router and then turn the computer back on.

Get a USB wireless network adapter for your desktop and it will have step-by-step instructions.

If you want to share files, you will need to run the Network Connection Wizard on both machines and share the folders.
