I have tried everything from counseling to almost "going upside his head." We have been separated not legally for 3 years now and I want to move on with my life. Being stuck in this situation has caused me to have a nervous breakdown and I do not want to be trapped in something that is not good for me mentally or physically.

Look in the paper sometimes the lawyers who handle uncontested divorces place ads there. I found one who estimated between $300 and $400. Tell the almost ex if he wants to get on with his life then pay for the divorce.

If you both want out and he is not going to contest the divorce then you don't even need a lawyer! You can buy a How to file for divorce book in your state and it tells you everything you need step by step. It shouldn't cost you more than 150 dollars total. But if you have children or he is going to contest then your going to have to get a lawyer.

I did it when I was 35 after being married 17 years. Like you, I was trapped in an unhealthy place, he told me I would never make it without him, I had no skills, no money and was scared to death. I got a job as a bartender (that's where the money is!) went to school part time, and made it on my own. I got my degree 2 years ago and could not be happier. Please don't stay because it will never get better, just harder to leave.

If you are concerned only of the financial costs of divorce, it is cheapest and easiest to come to an agreement regarding who gets what and when before calling on an attorney. Once you have an agreement, then you can share an attorney that simply files the paperwork according to your agreement.

If that angle will not work for you, then check with your local governemnt agencies to see what kind of legal aid and counsiling assistance is available.

If you can get an uncontested divorce, they do not cost that much. You can try contacting your local college for a pre-law student that can help you file the papers, depending on the state you live in. They cannot practice law, but you can get divorced for as little as $300. Go online and search for options for your state. Don't wait, your life is depending on it!

There are plenty of resources out there to help people in your situation. Why do people think that a divorce has to be expensive? Do you have property and a lot of other things to split? Are you worried abot being alone? Peace of mind goes a long way to normalcy!

you can afford a divorce. it will cost less than your medical bills when you have to be hospitalized from a severe anxiety attack or a complete mental breakdown.

people who claim they can't afford a divorce are copping out of doing the right thing our of fear. Get over it, hold your head up and march straight to a lawyer's office.

Wether you can afford it or not financially means very little in the big scheme of things. You obviously cant afford it emotionally so you need to get a divorce. Contrary to popular belief counciling hardly ever works. Good luck!

Since it's been 3 years, go see a court appointed mediator (they are free) and you'll pay only about $300 - 500 for it to be over with. If you are somewhat friendly, he may even pay for half as this would help him also.
