Turtles make fine pets. Painted turtles and red-eared sliders are great starters. If you have a good filter then you do not need to change the water 2 times a week. We have goldfish in our turtles tank. He was supposed to eat them but really hasn't, they help clean the tank. All animals bite so that should not be a deciding factor. As with the disease thing, turtles have been known to carry semolina. As long as you don't lick your turtle and wash your hands after handling it, you will be fine. Just make sure to do a lot of research before you buy any animal.

You mean to wander around loose in a house? Humans and turtles don't really like the same conditions.
A lot of people let some tortoises and box turtles run loose. This is kinda cool, but not really a good idea. Most tortoises need higher temps, and either more or less humidity than we are comfortable with- especially with conditioned 'house' air.
If you mean a caged pet in a house, then several species can be looked at. Try this article for ideas> http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Articles/firstturtle.htm

Yes, turtles are fascinating creatures. If you want to check out the link I provided it gives some incite on different types of turtles, tortoises, and what they need for care. Keep in mind that turtles aren't an easy pet to care for and require more attention that you think. Please take into consideration also the life span of a turtle is longer than any other normal pet. Good Luck

To be honest with you, turtles don't really make good pets. I had 2. They are a lot of work, and their tanks can smell pretty bad if you don't invest in a very good filter along with changing the water at least 2 times a week.

I have an aquatic turtle, and they take some time to care for. I have a slider and I think she was a good starter turtle. But land turtles do not require the same detail to cleaning as aquatic. Aquatic turtles tanks need to be cleaned more often, but a good filter will help with that.

Not good house pets and yes they are alot of work. I tried the water ones with a very large aquarium and land ones. A lot of work for an animal that shows no facial liking to anything. You are doing the thinking for him and believing that he likes everything that you do for him. These are your thoughts not his.

Turtles carry diseases. They are not good as pets if someone wants to hold them. Try hermit crabs, cleaner much easier to care for.
