They didn't turn mine off, but I have seen on the TLC show "A Baby Story" where they have. Some hospitals and doctors do things differently.

My docs shut off the epidural before it was time to push. But I think it was just so that I could feel SOME senstation down there and know when to push. If you are totally numb, you can' feel what you are pushing or when you are pushing sometimes. If you can manage to push the baby out quick enough(i did it in 23 minutes) than you might not feel much pain at all!!! It takes time for the epidural to wear off. By the time you are that far along, I think your adrenal has pretty much kicked in..anyways from my own personal experience the labor pains(contractions) were actually more painful than the "pushing" the baby. Good luck and no worries!!! Oh yeah and as soon as I started feeling the contractions(they had to induce the contractions cause my water broke but I didn't have any contractions) I wanted the damn epidural!!!! and I wanted it NOW

Depends on the hospital's policy.
My epidural stayed in until 1/2 hour after the baby was born, but they turned down the dosage while I was pushing - basically it felt like I had novicane in my legs/body. I could lift my hips and I only felt pressure. No pain, just pressure. You'll understand :)
I didn't have much pain b/c while the epidural wore off, they began giving me oxycotin and ibruprophen. I definitely recommend having an epidural (and get it as soon as possible) if you can't tolerate pain well. I see no reason to be in pain when they have these wonderful drugs!

My doctors did not shut off my epidural early enough and it was difficult to push. I ended up having a c-section because I wasn't strong enough to push her out because I was so drugged out with the epidural. You really don't want the epidural to be too much...just enough to kill the pain...not enough to make you weak. But this is a complicated question with probably a lot of different answers. Just trust your doctors and nurses and don't worry about the pain...you really will forget it...but what do I know...I was so out of it that I snored during the c-section.
Good luck.

I have a couple of opinions. Alot of people want to have babies with no pain medicine, it's natural! I'm in college to be a doctor right now, so I know alot bout this stuff. If I were you, I would take the pain pill, but not the epidural. The pain pill will ease the pain. I won't lie to you, the epidural will feel great before you start pushing...you'll be numb, but it can also paralyze you if they give you the wrong dosage, but its not likely. Anyways. You'll be numb before you start pushing, even with the epidural, when you start pushing and that baby starts coming out...it's going to hurt! So I don't recommend the epidural, but I do recommend some kind of pain medication in your I.V. If you want to, you can personally email me at jks_princess1991@yahoo.com Bye!

No. Yo can't shut off an epidural. It is in your blood. I have had two, and they did not wear off until about 2 hours after delivery. I had to have them upped, witch is nothing because the tube is still in your spine. They take it out after delivery. So no to the ton of bricks thing. It wears off slow. Good luck on trying to go natural. I tryed that, and now I thank god for epidurals.

I had the exact same experience as Mrs. Selden. By the time I needed to push I couldn't tell if I was doing it right or not because I couldn't feel anything except immense pain in my back. Then the only thing I remember about the c-section was it felt like they were rocking me back and forth (that's when they were getting the first baby out) and the next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery ready to see my babies (twins).

They turn the epidural off but usually by the time you push they haven't completely worn off and they help to dull the pain. You'll still feel pressure but not terrible pains. At least that's how it worked for me...

You are brave to try and go without meds but remember, at some point it becomes too late to be able to have them. At that point you can't go back, no meds......no matter how hard it hurts. I had meds and epidural and still had some pretty intense pain. Good luck, either way it's worth it!
