At first thoughts, i would recommend Penarth, as it is right next to Cardiff, crime is not that bad. But it is expensive, and the traffic can be bad at times. (They're doing up a roundabout at the moment and it's chaotic).

you need to be very near cardiff depending on where you will be working at some times of the day it can take 45 mins to get across cardiff! newport is 15mins away so the newport side is a good bet. has young night life and cheaper rents than cardiff generally but working class and some areas are very dodgy
however theres loads of new-developments around the bay area in cardiff, which is lovely ,has tons to do,theatre, clubs, art, restaurants not far from town, cos so many flats apartments have been built you could possibly get a flatshare. look on www.thishouseisforsale.co.uk and look for rentals in that area.
go and have a look at cardif bay.
good luck

Brecon is a good place. 40 mins to Centre of Cardiff. Young clubs here and some mad pubs full of laughs.. A good commute as it's straight down the A470, very unlikely to be holdups. Rents are about the national average.. some new flats being built that maybe let soon.

What do you think?
